A bit over a week ago, I was at my desk, leaned back with my feet propped up, as is my habit, Taters asleep on my lap, as is his. I was suddenly prompted to stretch out and pull an ink pen and an envelope closer (those are shown here), and scribbled the start of a story. Once Taters finished his nap, I sat up, transcribed what I’d written (it continues on the back, there), added some stuff, moved some stuff around, did a bit of tinkering. Then I emailed it off. Yesterday afternoon came the news that the first new and complete thing I’ve written in 2026, a short story titled “The Means,” will be in a forthcoming issue of LIghtspeed Magazine.
